Community Development Block Grant program is administered by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and grant reporting is required by law Title 42--The Public Health and Welfare Chapter 69--Community Development: 

Sec. 5306.* Allocation and distribution of funds[* Section 106 of the Act]

According to documents on HUD's website "a performance and evaluation report concerning the use of funds made available under section 5306 of this title, together with an assessment by the grantee of the relationship of such use to the objectives identified in the grantee's statement under subsection (a) of this section and to the requirements of subsection (b)(3) of this section. Such report shall also be made available to the citizens in each grantee's jurisdiction in sufficient time to permit such citizens to comment on such report prior to its submission, and in such manner and at such times as the grantee may determine." CITATION: Sec 5306

Each grant it seems has different legal and programmatic reporting requirements. Private funders often require an annual report or periodic updates of grant related activities. Many Federal grant-making agencies require quarterly financial and programmatic reports, some only require one final report. Ensuring your organization is adhering to grant reporting requirements is very important for current compliance and future grant funding.  

Examples of reporting requirements are below:

Justice Assistance Grant program is administered by the U.S. Department of Justice, Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA) and is authorized under Public Law 109-162. JAG are the leading source of federal justice funding to state and local jurisdictions. 

According to the BJA's website, JAG recipients are required to submit quarterly performance metrics reports, quarterly Financial Status Reports (SF-425s), and an annual programmatic report. Furthermore, according to Office of Management and Budget website grant reports are required by law, "under the Government Performance and Results Act of 1993 (GPRA), P.L. 103-62, and the GPRA Modernization Act of 2010, Public Law 111–352, applicants who receive funding under this solicitation must provide data that measures the results of their work. Quarterly performance metrics reports must be submitted through BJA’s Performance Measurement Tool (PMT) website..."  CITATION: P.L. 103-62
